Independent review of design of systems for the new port in Qatar.
In 2007 the Government of Qatar, via the New Port Project (NPP) Company, undertook a program of investment to develop a port in the south of the country (Mesaieed), the Hamad Port, which will be able to accommodate the future growth of container, vehicle and goods traffic, in general. The port is also of strategic importance for Qatar, since it is the only commercial port with sufficient draft for cargo ships.
The program includes a new harbor, a naval base and a logistics platform, which will occupy a total area of 27 km2. The new port will comprise three container terminals with a combined capacity in excess of six million TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). Moreover, the port will be able to handle general and perishable merchandise, vehicles, solid bulk cargoes, offshore operations and coastal surveillance, as well as providing marine support units.
SENER has provided consultancy services for the independent review of the design of each one of the 25 systems that make up the project, via an outstanding front office team and another back office team of highly skilled consultants. Some of these systems are considered critical for the operation:
- The Terminal Operating System (TOS)
- Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
- The Automated Gate Management System (AGMS)
- The Primary Data Center (PDC)
- The Modular Disaster Recovery Center (MDRC), a back-up data center
- A Project Integration Center (PIC), whose purpose is to train future operational staff and integrate different platforms and future developments in the testing stage before they are brought into operation.
Initially, given the unavailability of the PDC building, the MDRC building will act as an interim PDC and back-up equipment will be installed in a data center belonging to Ooredoo, who provide telecommunication services in the port. SENER, as is normal in contracts for independent design reviews, has been contracted by the main contractor (SALAM) but provides its services to the End Customer (NPP), reporting to the latter's PMC (Program Management Consultant).
